I've been living so long with my pictures of me, that it almost seems that they're real

Below you will find a few pictures that hold many memories for me.

Mom and I, about 1971. I was 3. My third birthday cake.

Me, from 1971These pictures are from 1971. I love the one of me with Mom - it may be one of the best pictures she ever took. I was so fidgety that she used a little building block to keep my hands busy. We lived in Evergreen Terrace here in Carbondale at the time. The other three pictures here are also from Evergreen Terrace, while Mom was attending school, a single mother with a really squirmy kid.. I actually remember sitting there looking at that birthday cake. Mom holding me, 1972The pic of Mom holding me shows her with her longish hair, before she started wearing it short (that would be the mid-70s). These were the fomative days of my youth, and they were also some rather heady days for Carbondale, with all the protests and such. Me, from 1979... notice the hair - that's my natural look

You know, retro is hip these days. People are looking fondly to the days of disco, and wearing the old bellbottoms and growing sideburns and such. Well, I don't remember those days as fondly as some. Really, back then we had an excuse because we didn't realize how silly this hair of mine looked. But I know better now. I will never wear brown again. LOL Me standing near the East German Border, August, 1989

I always look back at my time in Germany as being one of the best in my lfe. Not only did I learn a work ethic and gain 30 pounds, but I also got to see the world. I also had many opportunities to see some bits of history, either in action or through artifacts. This picture is one of history as it was happening. I stood here in front of the Wall that separated the two halves of Germany, about two months before the Wall started to come down. Refugees were already beginning to flood through Hungary into Austria, and we all could sense that change was in the air. I am sad that I wasn't there to see it. While the people of the former East Germany are still having a rough time of it, I honestly believe that what has happened was, for better or worse, the best result. I personally witnessed the sadness, the pollution, the desolation that was this artificial division.

Doug getting daddy practice, August, 1998These pictures here should speak for themselves, really. This kid is really quite a charmer.Doug getting daddy practice... but without the diapers
