Essays, Liner Notes, and other similarly published discussions on Music

From time to time, I stumble upon some of the most interesting liner notes, articles, etc. Over the years, my continued exposure to such resources eventually inspired my desire to explore the outer reaches of music; hence, The Galaxy. In order to enhance the learning and listening experience, I thought that I would post some of the most interesting material that I have discovered. In some cases, the material has already been posted on the Internet, and all I have to do is put up a link. In other cases, I have copied material down from liner notes, books, etc. I hope you find this to be as enlightening as I have.

Liner Notes

  • John Cage on Experimental Music
  • Charlie Mingus on composition and instrumentation in Jazz- This was originally pubIished as liner notes to Let My Children Hear Music, and has been recently been republished in a book of Mingus' writings. Unfortunately, the cd reissue does not carry the full essay. However, I have stumbled upon the full essay published on the internet. It is very revelatory into what drove Mingus to create. So here it is!!!
