Some Interesting Galactic Links to help you on your way to enlightenment
Ok, some of these links are a bit oldish, and I should really go through here and weed out a few. But there is some really good stuff here.
General
- CDNow - A great way to purchase recordings online. In addition to purchases, they also provide some reviews of new releases.
- The All Music Guide. An excellent database providing all sorts of information about artists, recordings, and miscelaneous. No classical music, but a great resource for everything else.
- CDUniverse - Their front page isn't as graphical, and I have not had as much a chance to check them out. But you gotta love a variety of shopping options.
- Modern Drummer: I love a good drum part in a song, and Modern Drummer does an excellent job of covering the technical aspects of drumming. Ahh! If only I could play drums!!!
- Music Boulevard - They have a nice selection - I spent an hour just perusing their Mingus collection - and they sell vinyl. Their prices are also competitive with the above-mentioned CDNow. I would say that by shopping around, you might find yourself a good deal. I will say this much - the prices that I am finding online are, on average, quite competitive with buying music at the store.
- The Sounds of Scotland - I couldn't resist! They specialize in Scottish music, have a killer collection of classic pipes recordings by the great pipers (among other varieties of Scottish music), and you can order online. Heck, they even help you figure out how to translate their prices, quoted in British pounds, to dollars. If anyone wanted to buy me a great gift, they could probably come here! Ha!
Bluegrass, Celtic, other primarily ethnic or roots resources
- Bluegrass Magazine - An online magazine that provides a plethora of news about bluegrass festivals, artists, reviews, schedules, radio stations that play bluegrass, and much more. An excellent resource that promises to improve.
- Green Linnet Records: A superior record company. Probably the best Celtic collection in the business.
- Rounder Records' excellent web site
- Shanachie Records: A nice selection of Celtic, Folk, and other ethnic and roots genres.
Classical Music Resources
Country Music Resources
- Country.Com
- The Grand Ole Opry - It's hard to beat the Opry in terms of the musical environment that it provides. The place is steeped in tradition and memories. It just may be the heart of country music. I was there years ago, and I really enjoyed myself. I have been planning on returning.
Jazz Music Resources
- Blue Note Records - One of the two best jazz label sites on the web. Fitting that it belongs to one of the best jazz labels, if not the best, period.
- ECM Records: A decent jazz collection, and an adventurous classical collection.
- Impulse! Records - Started in the 60's, Impulse! quickly developed a catalog stocked with some of the most daring jazz ever produced. Their web site displays their collection, both old and new, very well. The other best jazz label on the web. The liner notes that they publish here might alone be worth the trip. I wish other labels would do the same.
- Warner Bros. Jazz - Their jazz collection is a mixed bag of old and new, but that includes some absolute classics. And their web site ain't half bad.
Rock Music Resources
- Legacy Links: A diverse collection of links to various classic rock/pop band home pages.
- Rolling Stone Magazine. A rather industry feel, and their reviews are somewhat limited in scope, but Rolling Stone is probably one of the best rock music magazines in print.
