| Giovanni Pierluigi Da Palestrina c.1525 - 1594 |
Choir of Wesminster Abbey, Simon Preston, dir. | Missa Papae Marcelli (Mass of Pope Marcellus) | Classical, late Rennaisance/Choral/Religious | Polydor, 1986 | Mass written in honor of Pope Marcellus (Marcello Cervini), who served as Pope for three weeks in April, 1555. Date of composition estimated to be circa 1562-1563. Piece thought by some scholars to have been written at a time when the Catholic hierarchy was placing pressure on composers to simplify music, eliminating complex harmonies and context in favor of clarity of words (keep in mind that at that point in time, most music was written for religious purposes). As such, With this mass, Palestrina is given credit for alleviating the pressure on composers to abide by conservative Vatican edicts (re: Galileo), thereby allowing musical stylistic progression and innovation to continue (thus allowing for the dawn of the Baroque era, the Enlightenment, etc.). |
