Darius Milhaud

Branford Marsalis (alto saxophone), -w- the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra Le Creation du Monde Classical, 20th Century/French Sony, 2001 Darius Milhaud was a member of a group of French composers (more a group of friends than an organized group or collective) called Les Six. They did not collaborate on their music, but they often banded together for exhibitions and other such showings. Milhaud and Erik Satie (not so much a member as an inspiration for the group) are the most famous members. Milhaud is well known for the jazz influence heard in his music, and one of his students was Dave Brubeck.
Miles Davis Move Jazz, "Cool", post-bebop Blue Note, 1949 Davis had been playing in Charlie Parker's quintet up to that point, and this was his first attempt at leading a band. Gil Evans does the arranging, with clear influence from Stan Kenton and Claude Thornhill, whose orchestra several of the "Birth of the Cool" players had worked with prior. Yes, you do hear a tuba in the band. "Budo" named after noted bop pianist Bud Powell.

Marty Robbins A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation) Country/Rockabilly Columbia, 1957 White Sport Coat hit #1 on the pop charts. Don't Worry is notable for the accidental distortion heard during the Grady Martin guitar solo. Smoking Cigarettes was a Marty Robbins composition first made popular in 1958 by Lefty Frizzel.
