John Coltrane Locomotion Jazz, Post-bop, Avant Guarde Blue Note, 1957 Locomotion was from Coltrane's first session as a leader, and included Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). Chambers and Jones would go on to play with 'Trane in the first iteration of Miles Davis' great quintets. The Blessing was a Ornette Coleman composition, and features Don Cherry (actually a co-leader on this session) on pocket trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums. This recording the first instance of 'Trane soloing on soprano, and predates the noted My Favorite Things recording by several months. Cherry, Hayden and Blackwell are noted for the work they did with Ornette Coleman, which suggests the direction that Coltrane was about to take towards freer jazz compositional techniques in his later work. The song was recorded in 1960, but not released until 1967.
