Luc Beausejoir, pipe organ Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland Classical, late Rennaisance/early Baroque, Northern German pipe organ Analekta, 1995 Dietrich Buxtehude is considered one of the preeminent organ composers of the period preceeding J.S. Bach, and was a primary influence on Bach, especially given the story that Bach once walked hundreds of kilometers to hear Buxtehude play. We started tonight's show with two settings of German hymns, the first a well-known Martin Luther humn that would later be arranged by Bach himself.

Classical, late Rennaisance/early Baroque, Northern German chorales Harmonia Mundi, 1989 Schutz wrote two sets of Kleiner Geistlicher Concertos, Op. 8 and 9, and we heard here the second set, along with a separate piece that was likely written at the same time as the others. These are written for contrasting tenors, bass and soprano voices, with small instrumental forces (continuo and viola da gamba, placing the musical focus squarely on the voices.
