I would be playing more Buck Owens than I am, given that he died this past Saturday, March 25th. But I don't have the right material handy to do an appropriate tribute, given the amazing depth of his catalog and his huge influence on modern country music. So I'm playing a few songs from his wonderful Live at Carnegie Hall disc from 1966, and I will plan for a more extensive tribute when I can get the material. I think the wait will be worthwhile.
I'm also happy to be premiering two of the recent remasters of classic recordings, Patti Smith's Horses and Sam Cooke's Live at the Harlem Square Club. Interestingly enough, all of these rock remasters that I've been able to play have had a common thread, as they are being issued by Sony's Legacy imprint. The result is a veritable treasure trove of music history, as we are being given gems that have shaped the direction of pop and rock music, leading to the state of music today. The live Sam Cooke recording is an excellent example, Cooke's singing style bore a signinficant gospel influence that did not always come out in his studio recordings, but is in plain view here.
Composer's name is listed where notable (i.e. Classical Performance, Jazz Performance).
For more information on any of the rock, pop and Jazz music featured on this program, I frequently utilize AllMusic , an excellent free database holding a huge plethora of information about music and the artists that make it.
