Mr. Tamborine Man has Ramblin' Jack Elliot on 2nd guitar Both of these songs are live recordings, Chimes of Freedom a solo performance from the Newport Folk Festival in 1964, Maggie's Farm from the legendary 1965 Newport Folk Festival set, when Dylan premiered his new electric style, and featured Mike Butterfield on guitar, Al Kooper and Barry Goldberg on organ, Jerome Arnold on bass and Sam Lay on drums. The last two songs were unreleased until Bootleg Series vol. 7 in 2005, which served as the soundtrack for the "No Direction Home" documentary by Martin Scorsese.

Coleman revolutionized and scandalized the jazz world with this recording, which set the stage for John Coltrane's "sheets of sound" methodology. Coleman divided his forces into two quartets, one led by himself and one led by Dolphy, and the recording was set so that one quartet could be heard from one speaker and the other quartet on the other speaker.
