Jazz, and a few other things

This week, we move from the beautiful choral works we heard last week to some classic jazz. Of course, what better way (at least as far as I'm concerned) to hear jazz than to hear it from a slightly different perspective? Latin jazz has a huge big band feel and a slightly different instrumental emphasis, but is still some fine jazz nevertheless. Let's remember that Dizzy Gillespie was so inspired by this style that he wrote quite a bit of latin jazz compositions himself, including such

This material was recorded in the late 40s or early 50s, but I cannot find solid release information on this that suggests when it was actually recorded. That is a shame, since this is some really important stuff - Machito helped revolutionize the afro-cuban scene, and had such luminaries as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Buddy Rich playing and soloing on his sides.
