A set of fine guitarists here, all as notable for the fine guitar tones that they achieve as they are for their spectacular solos.

The backing vocals were overdubbed later - could this be an early use of overdubs in rock music? Interesting thing to research.

Candles In the Rain |
Buddah, 1970 |
Her manager/husband managed to get her in Woodstock, where she performed through the rainstorm. That experience inspired this song, which in turn inspired the concert tradition of lighting matches during ballads (maybe you've seen this in practice?) The backing choir was the Edwin Hawkins Singers, who had a big hit of their own with Oh Happy Day (wish I had a copy of that).

Missa Da Requiem (Requiem Mass) |
Classical, Romantic Era, works for chorus/solo voices with symphonic accompaniment |
RCA Victor, 1965 |
A recent reissue of a classic recording of what some have termed to be "Verdi's finest opera" (in-joke - it isn't an opera, one of his few major works that isn't). The Libera me section was written in 1869 and intended to be part of a collaborative requiem written for Giacomo Rossini, but the project was never published in Verdi's lifetime. So Verdi recycled his music in 1874 when a friend, poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni, died. |

I'm Just A Lucky So And So |
Bluebird/RCA, 1946 |
From the Blanton-Webster band recordings from 1944-1946. Documentation is missing, but I know it is on the Bluebird label, and that there more recent copies of the recording available. So, unfortunately, there is no record of who is singing on Lover Man.

I frequently close out the show with heavy metal or hard rock. So, therefore, I have to keep you guys on your toes, so that you don't know what to expect from me, right? This couldn't be any farther from heavy metal. However, the songcraft is top-notch here - some really, really beautiful songs.
