Starting the Easter Parade

We begin our Easter celebration with a lovely "cantata cycle" by Dietrich Buxtehude. Yeah, Easter isn't for a month yet, but there is just so many quality

Composer's name is listed where notable (i.e. Classical Performance, Jazz Performance).

For more information on any of the rock, pop and Jazz music featured on this program, I frequently utilize AllMusic , an excellent free database holding a huge plethora of information about music and the artists that make it.

Membra Jesu nostri patientis santissima (trans: Most Holy Members of our Suffering Jesus)
Classical, Baroque, mid-Baroque, song-cycle for soloist and choir with strings and continuo
Linn, 2001
A set of 7 "cantatas" meditating on the 7 body parts of Jesus - the feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart, and the face. Buxtehude used a poem written by Arnulf of Louvain (d. 1250), and set them for 5 voices (SSATB) with 2 violins, viola da gamba, and bosso continuo. Given Buxtehude's status as a noted organist, we should not be surprised at the use of the organ for the keyboard continuo. It is called a "cantata cycle", yet the individual pieces and the "cantatas" are all much shorter than what we would eventually see Bach compose. So it becomes more like a song cycle like what we heard from Mahler last week, or from Schubert a few weeks ago. The settings for the voices themselves are exquisite for their clarity. All in all, a lovely piece of music.
