More Easter music (reaching the big stuff)

We continue our series of programs that focus on music written for the Easter season with the first of our two Passion performances.

Composer's name is listed where notable (i.e. Classical Performance, Jazz Performance).

For more information on any of the rock, pop and Jazz music featured on this program, I frequently utilize AllMusic , an excellent free database holding a huge plethora of information about music and the artists that make it.

Composer Performer Title Genre Label Notes
Johann Sebastian Bach
Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki, dir., -w- Ingrid Schmithüsen (sop), Yoshikazu Mera (counter-tenor), Gerd Türk (tenor), Makoto Sakurada (tenor), Yoshie Hida (soprano), Chiyuki Urano (bass), Peter Kooij (bass)
Johannes-Passion (St. John's Passion)
Classical, Baroque era, choral with soloists and orchestra with bosso continuo
BIS, 1999
One of two existing Passions that Bach presented. This one was first written during Bach's first year in Leipzig (1724), and subsequently revised several times, with the last revision (made in 1749, which we are hearing here) returning the Passion to close to the original arrangement, with only a few alterations. This is considered indicative of how Bach felt about the work, that he returned to it in the last year of his life. This recording is considered one of the better recordings of this work currently available. An exquisite combination of Passion-play performance with Lutheran chorales.
