Premiered in 1902, this predates Schoenberg's adoption of the twelve-tone serialism method, but the work was still controversial enough that it was rejected by the Vienna Music Society, due to its lack of a tonal center and its use of an inverted ninth chord. While most commonly heard in his arrangement for string orchestra, this is his original version for string sextet.
