BIS, 1999
First written in 1727, and originally performed on Good Friday (April 11), 1727. It later received minor modifications in preparation for a 1736 performance, at which point an elaborate autograph score was produced. The Passion was written for double chorus and double orchestra, making it one of the largest of Bach's works, and is considered one of his many masterpieces. Each of the orchestras and choirs plays a different role in the interpretation of the text.
