This set of pieces are considered to be early examples of a break from the sonata compositional form - Schubert had been responding to publisher's requests for "short pieces, not too difficult, and in easy keys". The 8 Impromptus (Op. 90 and Op. 142) were all composed in 1827, although they were published in separate, incomplete sets, with the final two from Op. 90 published in 1853. These are excellent examples of Schubert's innate melodicism. You may find the melody of the Allegretto familiar.
