Sonata for piano and violin No. 9 in A major, Op. 47, "Kreutzer" |
Classical, Romantic era, chamber music |
EMI, 1999 |
Originally dedicated to violinist George Bridgetower, who premiered the piece, with Beethoven at piano, on 5/24/1803. The piece was so new when it was premiered that Bridgetower was forced to perform from Beethoven's copy while looking over Beethoven's shoulder. Bridgetower apparently even suggested a modification to the piece, which Beethoven accepted. However, there was a falling out between the two musicians, allegedly because Bridgetower insulted the honor of a female friend of Beethoven's, so Beethoven removed the dedication and dedicated it instead to Rodolphe Kreutzer, a noted violin virtuoso who never actually played the piece and considered it unplayable.
