New music!

We celebrated two birthdays this evening - Igor Stravinski's June 17th birthday, and Eric Dolphy's that was on June 20th. We also enjoyed the premiere of new music from Dredg, the fine art-rock band from San Francisco.

Composer's name is listed where notable (i.e. Classical Performance, Jazz Performance).

For more information on any of the rock, pop and Jazz music featured on this program, I frequently utilize AllMusic , an excellent free database holding a huge plethora of information about music and the artists that make it.

Igor Stravinski
BBC National Orchestra of Wales, David Atherton, cond.
Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring)
Classical, 20th Century, avant guarde, music for symphonic orchestra
BBC Music, 1994
The original Russian title was Vesna svyashchennaya (literally "Sacred Spring"), but it is more commonly referred to by its French title and the subsequent English translation. Written in 1913, and part of a set of three ballets commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev, the others being Firebird (1910) and Petrushka (1911). The 1913 Paris premiere sparked a riot that began during the opening bassoon solo, and intensified to a point where Paris police was called during the intermission (the performance continued). Stravinski also composed a 4 hands piano transcription, and created a piano roll transcription that is said to suggest that Stravinski intended the compostion to be played at a faster tempo, but was limited by inability of the members of a large orchestra to handle the rhythmic complexities in the piece.
