Igor Stravinski |
BBC National Orchestra of Wales, David Atherton, cond. |
Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) |
Classical, 20th Century, avant guarde, music for symphonic orchestra |
BBC Music, 1994 |
The original Russian title was Vesna svyashchennaya (literally "Sacred Spring"), but it is more commonly referred to by its French title and the subsequent English translation. Written in 1913, and part of a set of three ballets commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev, the others being Firebird (1910) and Petrushka (1911). The 1913 Paris premiere sparked a riot that began during the opening bassoon solo, and intensified to a point where Paris police was called during the intermission (the performance continued). Stravinski also composed a 4 hands piano transcription, and created a piano roll transcription that is said to suggest that Stravinski intended the compostion to be played at a faster tempo, but was limited by inability of the members of a large orchestra to handle the rhythmic complexities in the piece. |
