Written in 1688 and believed to have been premiered at a Chelsea bording school for girls before the King. The opera was likely written to celebrate the ascension of William and Mary to the English throne. However, the subject matter became politically untenable, and the opera was not performed again until after the composer's death a few years later. The finale features a well-known aria, "When I am laid in earth", commonly referred to as Dido's Lament.
