The piano in this instance is one where the strings are not struck by hammers, but rather bowed by nylon fishing wire coated in resin, creating an eerie, otherworldly sound. The arrangement was for 14 instruments with assigned pitches, with the length and dynamic of the pitches left to the decision of the musician, provided that pitches played loudly would be short.

One of a limited number of recordings of this piece that include a chorus in the introduction and the finale. During the introduction the chorus sings "God Preserve Thy People", a Russian Orthodox hymn; during the finale, we hear "God Preserve Thy People" and "God Save The Tsar", which was the Russian National Anthem during Tchaikovski's day (but not in 1812).
