Domine Deus meus a 6 |
Classical, Rennaissance, motet for small vocal group |
Deutsche Grammophon, 2004 |
A collection of music derived from Gabrieli's Canzoni e sonate, a 1615 work that is an early synthesis of instrumental and vocal forces. Gabrieli wrote this for a specific church in Venice which provided spaces in the 4 corners of the building for separate brass or vocal choirs, and Gabrieli used this capacity to create music written for larger groups. The Magnificat in particular is most unusual, presenting a mix of brass and vocal choirs with organ, and achieving a very full sound. Other parts of the work {not heard tonight) include early examples of bosso continuo, and an early sampling of the potential of the violin. |
