Completed in 1839, with the third movement written in 1837. The sonata was influenced by Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32, but was so far ahead of his time that Robert Schumann (a noted music journalist as well as composer) stated that the work "simply bound together four of his most unruly children," while Felix Mendelsson famously held his ears and stated, "as music I abhor it."
