Based on a theme given to Bach by Frederick II of Prussia upon Bach's visit to the king's palace. Bach had sat down and on the spot improvised a 3 voice fugue, then later expanded the improvisation to the work we hear here, and had the composition engraved and dedicated to the king. The visit was also Bach's first exposure to the newly invented fortepiano, the king possessing an instrument built by noted organ builder Gottfried Silbermann. | |
