L'homme armé |

ASV, 2000 |
L'homme armé was a popular secular song, which may have been written around the time of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks in 1453 (the origins of the song are debated). The song was used as the basis (in technical terms, the canctus firmus) for more than 40 masses, including works by noted composers Gulliame Dufay, Josquin Des Pres, Robert Morton, and Giovanni Palestrina. Ockeghem's rendition may be one of the earliest such uses (although it is not thought to be the earliest), dating from the 1450s. |
